Escape the Backrooms contains sudden entity encounters, loud pursuit moments, sanity-related visions and environmental deaths. Looking for “all jumpscares” is useful for learning what can surprise you, but the game does not reduce to one fixed sequence of scares that every run plays in the same order.
This is a practical index of recognizable threats and their triggers, rather than a verified frame-by-frame gallery of every current death animation. New content, including Plastic Mariana, makes old “all deaths” compilations incomplete for later builds. Do not use a video's total as a permanent count of the game's scares.
Know which kind of scare you are preparing for
| Encounter type | What produces the surprise | What preparation helps |
|---|---|---|
| A roaming entity spots you | A search turns into pursuit | Identify cover or a retreat before leaving safety |
| An entity is waiting near a route | You approach its threat area | Read the level's task instead of rushing to an apparent exit |
| A chase begins | The level requires sustained movement | Follow the route and avoid unnecessary stops |
| Sanity becomes critical | Smiling visions intrude on the screen | Manage sanity and use almond water when needed |
| An environmental hazard is triggered | A path or interaction is unsafe | Observe clues before committing |
A tense image of an entity is not necessarily the exact frame that appears when it catches you. Likewise, a sudden chase does not always mean an unavoidable death. Many encounters are designed around learning a response.
Howler and Skin-Stealer surprises
The Howler is the tall, thin threat associated with the opening yellow halls and several later spaces. Seeing it early teaches a basic point: a familiar-looking empty room can become a pursuit route. Keep your exit direction in mind so that the surprise does not make you run into a dead end.
The Skin-Stealer adds uncertainty by sometimes resembling a hazmat-suited player. Do not assume that every human-shaped figure in the distance is a teammate. Its reveal can turn an ordinary search into an urgent escape.
In relevant areas, doors and hiding spots provide options against a Skin-Stealer. Approach a search with a route back to cover rather than wandering far from the nearest escape. Do not assume that a hiding response used in one level applies to every entity or every scripted chase.

Hounds and Smilers require different responses
A Hound's appearance and sound can make an encounter feel immediately overwhelming, but a flashlight can stun it. That creates an opportunity to move away and break the situation instead of continuing to stare at it until it reaches you. The allowed margin depends on difficulty, so avoid treating one successful stun as an unlimited defense.
Smilers are associated with darkness and dangerous contact. Normal movement advice that works against a slower roaming enemy is not a reliable plan for crossing their threat area. Brightly lit safe positions matter in the encounters built around them.
A Smiler-like screen intrusion can also be connected to low sanity. Distinguish the resource problem from a creature physically chasing you down a corridor. Running without addressing sanity will not solve the underlying reason for those visions.

Partygoers, Clumps and forced movement
Partygoer areas often ask for stealth and careful positioning. Tables are important hiding places in the relevant sections. If you are detected, knowing the nearest usable cover is more helpful than trying to improvise while the sudden noise occupies your attention.
The Clump appears in chase situations where the correct response is to keep enough distance and continue moving. It also appears in Level 37.2 outside a simple single corridor chase. That distinction matters: spotting the same creature does not mean the surrounding level always follows the same script.
Prepare for a chase by looking at the route, not by trying to remove the fear through a higher volume setting or repeated exposure alone. Recognizing a threat helps only when you also know whether you should hide, evade or keep running.
Wretches and late surprises during a search
Wretches are particularly disruptive because they can interrupt tasks in confined or poorly visible areas. In Level 6, limited visibility makes scanner information important. In Darkened Suburbs, the risk continues inside buildings, so reaching a house is not automatically the end of danger.
Keep the retreat connected to the task. Before entering a room to inspect an objective, identify the door or hiding place you would need if the threat appears. A search that leaves you facing a wall with no exit plan is more vulnerable to a sudden encounter.
The October 29, 2026 update repaired specific Wretch behavior in Darkened Suburbs. Older footage can therefore show a bug rather than the intended current encounter. Learn the recognizable threat, but do not memorize a broken animation or trapped enemy as a dependable escape method.

Environmental deaths and later content
Not every abrupt death is an entity attack. The game includes environmental tasks and hazards, including dangerous slide choices and pitfalls. These can surprise a player who assumes that only visible monsters can end a run.
Read a clue or inspect the setting before choosing an interaction that commits your character. A montage removes the decision that came before the death, which can make an avoidable hazard look like a random unavoidable scare.
Plastic Mariana was added in August 2026 with new entities and a variant. The October update subsequently fixed issues involving its shark and ball-pit interactions. That establishes that the current game extends beyond older entity lists, but it does not justify inventing names, scare counts or precise death-animation sequences that have not been verified.
If your purpose is spoiler-light preparation, focus on the encounter categories and the response each asks for. If your purpose is an exhaustive visual collection, check the exact game version attached to the footage and expect an older compilation to miss later additions.
