Security Terminal and Gate Access

Quick Answer

The Escape the Backrooms security terminal code is a matching puzzle, not one universal password. Read the target text on the right of the screen and find its exact match among the three selectable sections.

The Escape the Backrooms security terminal code is a matching puzzle, not one universal password. Read the target text on the right of the screen and find its exact match among the three selectable sections. Confirm a correct match, then repeat until you have completed three matches and the door opens.

The separate password itheardyou belongs to the desktop computers inside the M.E.G. base. Entering that word at the outside security puzzle does not solve the matching stage.

Recognize which screen you are using

ScreenRequired action
Security terminal beside the base doorMatch the target text shown on the right
Desktop computer inside the baseEnter the password from the note
Computer desktop after loginRun Gate.exe and approve its action
Security Override back at Level 1Use the lever to open the garage gate

The screens are part of one progression sequence, which is why players often refer to all of them as “the code.” Identify the interface first. A list of changing strings is the matching stage; a normal computer login is the password stage.

Complete the three matches

  1. Enter the Hub from the green Exit doorway after the elevator section of Level 1.
  2. Find the side door leading toward the M.E.G. base and interact with its security terminal.
  3. Read the target shown on the right side of the interface.
  4. Move through the selectable sections and inspect the text until you find an exact match.
  5. Confirm that selection. A correct match turns green and the target changes.
  6. Read the new target and repeat until the three required matches are complete.

Use the controls shown by your current interface and bindings. Keyboard descriptions in older tutorials differ, so the important operation is changing the selected section, moving through its entries and confirming the matching text.

Do not keep searching for the first target after a successful confirmation. The next stage asks for a different match. Likewise, a string that worked in a video is useful only if your own screen is asking for that same string.

Restore the lights inside the base

After the terminal opens the door, enter the dark base room. Find the power-control panel on the right and switch its controls on to restore the lights. This makes the room, desks and computers easier to identify.

Solving the outside terminal gives access to this room. It does not automatically complete the desktop login or open the Level 1 gate. Continue through the remaining interactions before returning to the garage.

Use the computer password

A note on a table lists possible passwords, with the incorrect ones crossed out. The usable password is itheardyou. Enter it on a desktop computer to log in.

Once you reach the desktop, run Gate.exe and approve its warning or confirmation. This is the action that enables progression at the garage gate. Merely entering the password and leaving the computer is not the same as running the gate application.

Return to the Security Override

Leave the base and return through the Hub connection to Level 1. At the garage gate, interact with the Security Override and operate the red lever. The gate then opens into the next section.

If the garage still blocks you, work backward through this short chain: the override lever, Gate.exe, the computer login, then the powered base room. Repeating the security-terminal puzzle is unnecessary if its door is already open and your missing action is farther along the sequence.

The useful result is an opened garage route. Keep the live word-matching puzzle, the fixed desktop password and the physical gate lever separate, and you can identify the missing step without guessing unrelated number codes.
