Escape the Backrooms is available on PS5. It launched on May 28, 2026, supports solo play and online co-op for up to four players, and includes cross-platform play with PC and Xbox Series X|S. Nintendo Switch 2 joined the supported cross-play platforms in July 2026.
PS Plus is required for online play. You can play alone without assembling a multiplayer group; the PlayStation listing marks online play as optional.
Identify the correct PS5 game
Choose Escape the Backrooms published by Secret Mode. The PlayStation listing identifies it as a PS5 version, with a May 28, 2026 release date. This matters because several unrelated games use similar combinations of “Escape,” “Backrooms” and “Horror” in their names.
The US price was $12.99 as of November 1, 2026. Check your own regional listing before buying because local prices and promotions can differ. The listing supports DualSense vibration and includes English voice audio with multiple screen languages.

Solo and online requirements
| How you want to play | What to check |
|---|---|
| Alone on PS5 | The game supports one player; online play is optional |
| With other PS5 players | Each player needs game access and PS Plus for online play |
| With PC or other supported consoles | Use cross-platform multiplayer and the room-code joining option |
| Together on one screen | The listing provides one local player, rather than local split-screen co-op |
The four-player online label does not mean four people can play from one PS5. If two people are in the same room and both want to control a character, plan around separate supported devices and an online session.
What the console edition contains
This is the co-op horror exploration game with 30+ levels, environmental escape tasks and hostile entities. The console launch included the content released for the PC edition since its 2022 Early Access debut, along with the Winter Wanderer and Chinese New Year cosmetics described at launch.
The game asks you to find exits while surviving the level's particular threat. Proximity voice chat is part of that experience: you can lose contact when separated, and entities can hear you. A headset is useful for coordination, but keep voice troubleshooting separate from whether cross-play itself works.
Update before joining an existing run
The October 29, 2026 Lost & Found update fixed PS5 crashes when joining ongoing sessions in Grassrooms and the MEG Base section of Darkened Suburbs. It also fixed player IDs being obscured by social icons. Earlier updates addressed a crash when creating certain lobbies offline after a fresh boot and problems with blocked players still communicating.
These patch notes describe repaired issues. They do not establish that every current PS5 session crashes, or guarantee that an unrelated connection problem has the same cause. Install available updates before comparing your experience with an older video or review.
If a join still fails, record the level, whether the host was already playing, and the platforms in the lobby. That is more useful than treating an old launch complaint as a permanent limitation of the PS5 edition.
