The monsters in Escape the Backrooms are usually called entities, and their counters are different. Use a flashlight against Hounds, suitable doors and hiding places against Skin-Stealers, and table cover against Partygoers. Staying in light helps in the Habitable Zone's Smiler section, while some chase sequences require you to keep running toward the exit.
Identify the entity before using a familiar counter. A flashlight is helpful against one threat and a poor choice around another. The locations below help recognize encounters; they are not a claim that every entity appears only in the listed area or that the roster stops changing with updates.
Fast recognition and first response
| Entity | Recognizable feature | First useful response |
|---|---|---|
| Bacteria or Howler | Tall, spindly pursuer in yellow-room areas | Break line of sight around walls |
| Skin-Stealer | Humanoid threat that can resemble a wanderer | Reach a suitable room and close the door |
| Hound | Low, dog-like humanoid | Aim a flashlight and use the stun to escape |
| Smiler | Glowing smile in darkness | Respect the level's light or chase rules |
| Female Deathmoth | Large moth in caves or the boiler area | Crouch past without directing light at it |
| Partygoer | Party-themed humanoid, often near tables | Sneak; use table cover if spotted |
| Scratcher | Long-limbed creature in the library | Avoid its patrol and use available distractions |
| Neighborhood Watch | Giant eye moving through Level 9 streets | Get out of its view and reach house cover |
| Aranea Membri | Spider-like hallway creature in Level 188 | Retreat into a room |
| Windows entity | Figure or red eyes at a window | Keep your distance from the window |

Bacteria and Skin-Stealers require different cover
Bacteria, also called the Howler in guides, is the tall threat associated with the opening yellow maze and later yellow-room sections. Use corners and walls to remove its direct view of you. In later areas where small crawlspaces are available, those spaces can form part of your escape route. Do not stop in an exposed passage simply because you have briefly gained distance.
Skin-Stealers are especially easy to misread in co-op because they can resemble a player in a hazmat suit. A familiar silhouette is not enough to establish that someone is your teammate. Keep track of where the real group is and avoid approaching an unexplained figure without checking the surrounding situation.
Suitable doors, beds and closets provide useful ways to break a Skin-Stealer encounter. Choose a hiding place that actually exists in the current room; “hide” is not an instruction to stop behind any object and assume it works. The tight hotel corridors make knowing the nearest room particularly useful.

Hounds punish the wrong flashlight assumption
Hounds appear prominently in the Electrical Station and can also be encountered in the hotel. The flashlight stun creates an opportunity to move away. It is not an attack that permanently removes every Hound in the game.
Easy and Normal permit repeated stuns, while Hard and Nightmare restrict that response much more sharply. On the harder settings, use the first stun to reach a door or break contact instead of waiting for an unlimited chain of interruptions.
The Electrical Station also contains electric puddles. They remain a separate hazard while you flee, and a Hound running near one is not a reason to step into it yourself. Look at the route behind and beside you before retreating from the enemy in front.
Smilers and chase sequences depend on the level
In the Habitable Zone, move between the illuminated side areas and respect the changing main lights. Standing in darkness and crouching is not the same kind of defense as crouching past a moth. A Smiler encounter needs the light rules of that location.
Pipe Dreams and the running levels are different situations. Their routes include committed chase sections where your job is to keep moving toward the exit and avoid obstacles. Do not transplant a safe waiting strategy from a garage light section into a corridor that is already running a chase.
Low sanity can also produce smiling hallucinations. Treat sanity management and a physical entity in the room as related but distinct concerns; a bottle of Almond Water does not replace the route you need to escape a live pursuit.
Deathmoths and Partygoers reward quiet movement
Female Deathmoths are dangerous around the hotel boiler area and caves. Crouch past them and avoid shining your flashlight at them. In the hotel, steam valves can interrupt a pursuit when the route brings you to one. The better plan remains avoiding detection while you navigate.
Male Deathmoth swarms serve a different role. Bug Spray turns them into Moth Jelly for the hotel's progression. Do not confuse those small swarms with the large dangerous female moths simply because both names contain Deathmoth.
Partygoers often begin in fixed positions in Level Fun. Crouch around their sight lines, then reach a table if they detect you. Keep a usable hiding place in mind before crossing an exposed gap. In Level Fun+, Party Hosts add another layer: the eye-bearing cake entities call in Partygoers, and the area's fireworks are used against the Hosts.

The library and dark maze require listening and observation
The Scratcher patrols The End while you collect the required tapes. Use the displayed objective count rather than assuming another player's tape total applies to your group. Fire alarms can draw the creature elsewhere, and tables provide cover where available.
Lights Out replaces normal visibility with the Lidar scanner. Wretches appear as a danger you must track through the scanner's information and nearby sounds. Crouching and keeping to the wall can help avoid a close encounter, but continue checking the threat rather than treating the entire wall as an invulnerability zone.
Wretches in houses and the Abandoned Outpost occupy different spaces from the dark-maze encounter. In Darkened Suburbs, a computer may be inside a guarded building. Identify the Wretch's position before committing to the interaction that keeps your attention on the screen.
Outdoor entities have their own warning signs
Neighborhood Watch patrols the streets in Level 9. Its giant eye makes outside sight lines dangerous. Use houses as cover, while remembering that a Wretch can be inside the building you are entering. Escaping one entity does not automatically make the next room safe.
Level 10 has Facelings with different behavior. The stalking figure on the road can be discouraged by watching behind you, while the chainsaw-carrying pursuer requires movement and progress through the field route. Treat the chainsaw sound as a warning rather than running toward it to investigate.
Level 94's Animations are tied to the night cycle. Reach a house before nightfall and use an appropriate hiding place. In the castle, the Animated King is a separate encounter: keep checking for it and use your flashlight while waiting for the roller-coaster exit to become available.

Water and blocked passages are also threats
The Thing makes the flooded Level 7 route dangerous. Stay with the intended boat route rather than assuming open water is a harmless shortcut. In the Poolrooms, avoid the dark contaminated water associated with Hydrolitis Plague.
The Bone Thief in Level 0.2 guards the dangerous crossing near the onward elevator. Complete the power objective so the gate can temporarily close across its area, then cross during the intended opportunity. The visible elevator is a destination, not evidence that the space between you and it is safe yet.
The Clump appears in both chase and roaming encounters. In a chase, follow the escape route and use the intended safe areas. In Level 37.2, avoid attracting it while completing the valve tasks. Do not assume that advice for one encounter applies unchanged to the other.
Windows, Kitty and the newer shark
In Level 188, Aranea Membri controls the hallways while the Windows entity punishes getting too close to certain windows. Retreating into a room is useful against the hallway creature, but moving right up to its window can introduce the other threat. Leave space around both hazards.
In Kitty's house, keep watching Kitty while collecting the toys. Turning your attention away for too long allows the entity to approach. This is an observation-based encounter, which differs from the library's sound and distraction problem.

Level 421 adds the giant shark in Plastic Mariana's enormous ball pit. Work through the lighthouse objective while avoiding it, then follow the white-ball route when it appears. The October 2026 update fixed the shark stopping its pursuit after a kill, so an old clip of a passive shark should not be treated as a current counter.
Not every non-player figure is an enemy. The Partypooper in Level 52 guides the route, and some wanderers are not hostile. Recognize the figure and the task before deciding that every character needs to be avoided or attacked.
